ಕನ್ನಡ ಶಾಲೆ - 10/೦೮/೨೦೧೬

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ!
ಬಹಳ ದಿನಗಳಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಭೇಟಿ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದಸರ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಗಲಾಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಿಕ್ಕಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಹೋದ ಶನಿವಾರ ಮೂರೇ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದರು ಮೇಲ್ವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮೇಘ ಮತ್ತು ದಿಶಾ ಅವರನ್ನ ಸೇರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಒಂದು ಕಿರು ನಾಟಕ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರೋ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಎರಡು ಗುಂಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಆ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ಅವರುಗಳೇ ೨೫ ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಮೂಲವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆ ಬರೆದು, ಕಿರುನಾಟಕ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಇದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ assignment. ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿಯೇ ಮಾಡಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ನೋಡಿ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಕಥೆ - "ವಿಶೇಷ ಬೀಸಣಿಗೆ". ಇದನ್ನೇ ಸಿಂಚನ ದೀಪಾವಳಿಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿಸೋಣವೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ನೋಡೋಣ. ಎರಡನೇ ಮತ್ತು ಮೂರನೇ ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು print ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.
ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಕ್ಕಳ ವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ  ಮೈತ್ರೇಯನೆಂಬ ಹೊಸ ಹುಡುಗ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಾವು ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅವಕಾಶ ಆಯಿತು. 'ಅ' ಇಂದ 'ಹ' ವರೆಗೂ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಸಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ ಹೇಳಿಸಿದೆವು. ನಂತರ 'ಅ' ಮತ್ತು 'ಆ' ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳಿಂದ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಕೇಳಿದೆವು. ಬರೋ ಶನಿವಾರ ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ (ಸಮೀರ) ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ತಪ್ಪದೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನ ಕಳಿಸಿ. ಬರಕ್ಕಾಗದೆ ಹೋದರೆ, ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಇ-ಪತ್ರದ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ತಿಳಿಸಿ.

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ! ಬಹಳ ದಿನಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಭೇಟಿ! Hopefully, I will be more regular on posting this blog.

ಹೋದ ವಾರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ "ಸವಿ ಕನ್ನಡ" ಒಂದನೇ ತರಗತಿಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಸಹಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದ ಮೊದಲನೇ ಪಾಠದಿಂದ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಚಿತ್ರ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಪದ ಹೇಳುವುದು, ಸರಳ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವುದು, ಹೀಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ನಂತರ "ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರ" ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಓದಿದೆವು. ಅದರ ಸಾರಾಂಶವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡೆವು. ನಾವು ಆ ದಿನ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು ಎಂದು ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಬೇಕಾದರೆ  ಈ link ಅನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಷಯ. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು assignment ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಅವರು ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮದೇ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿ ಅದನ್ನ record ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರಬೇಕು.

For smaller kids, we had a new kid Arush. So we reviewed  some previous lessons as few of the other new students did not know how to introduce themselves in Kannada. 

1. Learn to introduce themselves, their dad, mom, brother (older and younger), sister (older, younger), grandpa and grandma in Kannada.

2. Learn the days of the week in Kannada.

We will follow "ಕನ್ನಡ ಪರಿಮಳ" text book for younger kids this year. More to come in the coming weeks.

ಮತ್ತೇನೂ ವಿಷಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಬರೋ ಶನಿವಾರ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕ್ ಅಥವಾ ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತ್ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರೋಣ. We will send an e-mail prior to that.

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ!

ಮೊದಲ ಮಾತೇನಂದರೆ - ಈ ಮಕ್ಮಳಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿಮಾನವಿಟ್ಟು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ  ತಾಯಿ ತಂದೆಯರಿಗೆ ಹೃತ್ಪೂರ್ವಕವಾದ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು! ಮತ್ತು ನೀವು teachersಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಕಾಣಿಕೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು. ತಮ್ಮ ಕುಶಲತೆಯಿಂದ ತಯಾರಿಸಿ, ರುಚಿಯಾದ  'ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ' cake ಮಾಡಿ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ತಿನಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಬಹಳ thanks!

ಭಾರತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಿ. ತಿಂಡಿ, ಟೀ,  ಕಾಫಿ supply ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರಿಗೂ ಬಹಳ thanks!

ಹೋದ ಶನಿವಾರ ನಮ್ಮ ಶಾಲೆಯ ೨೦೧೫-೨೦೧೬ ನೆ ಸಾಲಿನ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನ. ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರು(appropriate Kannada word, eh?) ಮೊದಲು ತಾವು ಏನೇನು ಪಾಠಗಳನ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರು. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಭಾಷಣಗಳನ್ನ ಕೇಳಿ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಯಿತು. I was amazed at these kids the way they spoke and told us all what they learned. The way Amogh brings in sports somehow into his speech, Diya's fluency in her speech, Suhaas addressing each bullet point that I had asked him to talk, Manasa's perfect pronunciation and fluency, Nidhi's vocabulary, Raghav's honest statements about Kannada classes, and last but not the least, Vikram's sincere acknowledgement that he did not learn much but still wants to continue coming to the class - these things make the life of teacher worthwhile! Even the smaller kids were not hesitant to talk in Kannada in front of so many people!





ನಿಮಗೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಳಿದಿರೋ ಹಾಗೆ, ಒಂದು ನೂತನ ಭಾಷೆ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ನಂತರ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಬೇಕು. ತದನಂತರ ಓದುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಬರೆಯುವುದು. ಈ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನೆ ನಾವು ಅನುಸರಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆ, ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ, ಮತ್ತು ಶಬ್ದಕೋಶ - ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಧ್ಯೇಯವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ವಿಧಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ಹೋದ ವಾರ ತಿಳಿಸಿದಹಾಗೆ, ವಿಧ ವಿಧ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳ ನಾಮಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತ್ ಅವರು 'ಹಣ್ಣು ಮಾರುವವನ ಹಾಡು' ಎಂಬ ಪದ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಕದಿಂದ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಆಟಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಹ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನ ತಿಳಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಪಟ್ಟೆವು. Jeopardy Game ಮೂಲಕ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ, ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯನ್ನೂ,  'ರಾಮ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ' ಆಟದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನೂ, 'ಪದ ಬಂಧ' ದ ಮೂಲಕ ಪದಗಳನ್ನೂ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು. 'ಕಣ್ಣಾ ಮುಚ್ಚಾಲೆ' ಆಟ ಆಡಿ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿತೆವು. ಕತೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವದನ್ನು ತಿಲಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು. ಸಿಂಚನ ಆಚರಿಸಿದ 'ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಮತ್ತು ದೀಪಾವಳಿ' ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ದರ್ಶನ' ಎಂಬ ಒಂದು ಕಿರು ನಾಟಕವಾಡಿ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಿದರು.

ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರು, ತಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ತಂದೆಯ ಹೆಸರು, ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದವರನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು.  ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರಿತಿಸುವುದು, ಸರಳ ಪದಗಳ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಓದುವುದು, ಹಣ್ಣು , ತರಕಾರಿ, ಬಣ್ಣಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದು, ಹೀಗೆ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿತರು. ಎಡಗಡೆ/ಬಲಗಡೆ,ಮುಂದೆ/ಹಿಂದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ/ಇಲ್ಲಿ, ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿದೆವು. 'ನದಿ-ದಡ' ಆಟವನ್ನಂತೂ ಬಹಳ ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟು ಬೇಜಾರಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಪ್ರಾಯಶಃ ಪ್ರತಿಸಲವೂ ಆಡಿದರು.

ಈಗ ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮಾತಾಡೋಣ. ಈ ಸಲ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ textbook ಅನ್ನುಮೂಲವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಅದನ್ನೇ ಅನುಸರಿಸೋಣವೆಂದು ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈ ಬರುವ ಬೇಸಿಗೆ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜನರೂ - ಅಂದರೆ ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತ್, ಮಲ್ಲಿಕ್, ಮತ್ತು ಮೀನಾ -  ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷದ lesson plan ಮಾಡೋಣವೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮರೆಯಬಾರದೆಂದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆಯೋ, ಪದ್ಯವೋ, ಸುದ್ದಿ ಸಮಾಚಾರವೋ, ಅಂತೂ ಏನೋ ಒಂದು ವಾರಕ್ಕೊಂದಂತೆ ಬರೆದು ಕಳಿಸೋಣವೆನ್ದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನೋಡುವಾ, ಇದು ಹೇಗೆ ಆಗತ್ತೆ ಅಂತ!

'ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೆ ಹೇಳೋ ಕಿಸಬಾಯಿದಾಸ' ಅನ್ನೋ ತರಹ ಇವನೇನಪ್ಪ ತಿರುಗ ಹೇಳ್ತಾನೆ ಇವನು ಅಂತ ಬೇಜಾರು ಮಾಡ್ಕೋ ಬೇಡಿ! ಏನಪ್ಪಾ ಅಂದ್ರೆ, ಅದೇ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಜೊತೆ ಅಪ್ಪ ಅಮ್ಮಂದಿರು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತಾಡೋದು. ಈ ಬೇಸಿಗೆ ರಜದಲ್ಲಿ ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು enforce ಮಾಡಿ.

ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯ ಹೇಳೋದು ಮರೆತುಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಗುಂಪಿನಿಂದ ದಿಶ ಷಣ್ಮುಗಪ್ಪ ಮೇಸನ್ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಪುನಃ Boston ಗೆ ತೆರಳಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವಳಿಗೆ, ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ, ಸ್ಮಿತಾ ಅವರಿಗೆ, ಹಾಗು ದಿಶಾ ತಮ್ಮ ಸನತ್ ಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳುವ. ಬೇಕಾದಷ್ಟು ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದ ನಾಗಾನಂದ್ ಮತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ಅವರಿಗೂ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಅವರಿಗೂ ಸಹ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳುವ.

ಇವತ್ತಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಸಾಕಲ್ವೆ? ನೋಡೋಣ ಮುಂದಿನ ಸಲ.

Kannada Play Day held on May 14, 2016

Well, we are almost at the end of this academic year!

  is on May 21, 2016!

We started in September and had at least 25 classes. If my memory is right, Megha did not miss a single class! Go Megha!! But really,  it was a great pleasure to work with all the kids.

During this last class, Srikanth completed the poems he had started during the previous class - 'ಹಣ್ಣು ಮಾರುವವನ ಹಾಡು' ಮತ್ತು 'ಇರುವೆ ಇರುವೆ ಬಾ ಇರುವೆ'. ಯಾವ ಯಾವ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಯಾವ ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅಂತ ಆ ಪದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಓದಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಪದ್ಯದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಈ ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ ನ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. For juniors, Mallik and Meena quizzed the kids on each alphabet by writing on the board and asking kids to recognize them.

For the last class on May 21, we will have an extended session starting at 3 pm and ending by 4.30 pm. This class will be held Mallik's house. All parents are welcome to join us at around 3.30 pm.

We have sent a feedback form along with the kids. Some kids may need help filling up the form. We will be asking them to read what they have written.

Field trip to Kroger - 04/30/16

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ!

     Last Saturday, we went on a field trip to Kroger. Purpose was to show and tell different vegetables, fruits, daily products, and other miscellaneous items. We made four groups combining both junior and senior session kids and went around each aisle.

    Most of the kids were eager to know about each item and write down the color, size, and shape. They were given a sheet (link to an empty sheet is here) where they could write these things. Please make sure they fill it up and bring it during the next class. We will spend some time reviewing these items with the kids.

ಹೋದ ಶನಿವಾರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಬಿ. ಆರ್. ಛಾಯ ಅವರ 'ಹಿಂದುಸ್ತಾನವು ಎಂದೂ ಮರೆಯದ' ಹಾಡಿನಿಂದ ಪಾಠ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಇಂದ ಅವರುಗಳು spring break ನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದರು ಅಂತ ಕೇಳಿದೆವು. ಎಲ್ಲ ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ (ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು!) ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ Red River Gorge Trip ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಲೇಖನವನ್ನು ಓದಿಸಿದೆವು.

ನಿಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ಗೊತ್ತಿರೋ ಹಾಗೆ ಛಾಯಾ ಅವರು ಬರೋ ಶನಿವಾರ Cincinnati ಗೆ ಬಂದು ನಮ್ಮ 'ಸಿಂಚನ' ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಯುಗಾದಿ ಹಬ್ಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಧುರ ಕಂಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನ ತಣಿಸಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೋಸ್ಕರ ನಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಹಾಡನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಸಿದೆವು. ನಂತರ 'ಕನ್ನಡ ಪದಬಂಧ' (cross-word in Kannada) ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟ ಆದರೂ ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು! ನೀವೂ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ನೋಡಿ - 'ಕನ್ನಡ ಪದಬಂಧ'.

ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲವು ಪಾಠಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು - ಬಣ್ಣಗಳು, ತರಕಾರಿ, ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು, ಅಕ್ಷರಮಾಲೆ, ಮತ್ತು ವಾರಗಳು. 'ಒಳಗಡೆ ಹೊರಗಡೆ' ಅನ್ನುವ ಒಂದು ಆಟ ಸಹ ಆಡಿದರು.

ಯುಗಾದಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಪ್ರಯುಕ್ತ ಶನಿವಾರ (04/09/2016) ಕನ್ನಡ ಶಾಲೆ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Kannada Play Day Held on 03/19/16

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ!

We had about nine kids in the Senior section. This time we continued with our quest to understand the meaning of the song 'ಈ ಜನುಮವೇ' from the movie 'ಒಗ್ಗರಣೆ'. Again, we could not complete the second stanza due to lack of time. And of course, the kids were eager to play a game of Jeopardy! We made three teams. There were five categories - 'ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ', 'ವಿರುದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಕ ಪದಗಳು', 'ತರಕಾರಿ/ಹಣ್ಣು', 'ಶಬ್ದಕೋಶ',  and 'Direction'. A few questions were on the difficult side but the kids were able to answer most of them. For example, there was an image of ಹಲಸಿನ ಹಣ್ಣು and the kids had to name the fruit in Kannada. All in all, I think the kids enjoyed the game. Again, I strongly advise the parents to tell their kids the name of vegetables or fruits or for that matter, any item in Kannada, while shopping at grocery stores to increase their vocabulary in Kannada.  

For juniors, we continued with the same lesson plan that was sent during the previous week.

Please note that there will not be any session this coming week (03/26/16) due to Spring Break.

Kannada Play Day - 03/12/2016

During this session, we had only four kids in the Senior section. So, instead of Jeopardy, we read a small story taken from the textbook. The story was stressing on the words like ಕೈ, ನೈ, etc. I have attached the story below. Whoever missed the class, please try to read the story. The second half was devoted to reviewing the song from the movie 'ಒಗ್ಗರಣೆ' written by Jayant Kaikini. It is a beautiful song listing different flavors from different regions of Karnataka. For juniors, we played a game of Jeopardy for the first time! Looks like they enjoyed it a lot! The categories were - ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು, ತರಕಾರಿ, ಅಡಿಗೆಮನೆ, ನಿಸರ್ಗ, ವಾರಗಳು. It was mostly based on guessing the pictures. Please check with your kids and let us know how they felt about it. We would like to do more of these as a revision.

Kannada Play Day held on 03/05/2016

Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

For this session, we were planning for a game of Jeopardy but due to lack of time in preparation, we could not do it. Hopefully, next week. Anyway, for seniors, we continued with the same story 'ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕೋತಿಗಳು' but this time the kids had to narrate the story in Kannada by looking at the pictures and then convert each sentence to ಭೂತ ಕಾಲ. They learnt some new words - ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ, ಉಪಾಯ, ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸು, ಅನುಸರಿಸು, ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ. We also learnt ನಾನು, ನನ್ನ, ನನ್ನದು, ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ and then did some exercise with ಅವರ, ಅವರು, etc. by filling the blanks in the following table. Please review this with your kids.

There are some kids (not many) who are still unable to recognize alphabets. Please ensure that they come up to speed. You can print ಅಕ್ಷರಮಾಲೆ and give it to them. They can try reading it while in the car or while having dinner. It is essential that they recognize these before the end of this month.

For juniors, we continued with the previous week's lesson plan as we could not complete during last week's session.

Kannada Play Day held on 02/27/2016

During last week's session, we had almost a full-house in both sessions.

For seniors, we continued with some examples of ಷಷ್ಠೀ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ('ಆದಿಯ ಅಣ್ಣನ ಹೆಸರು ವಿಕ್ರಮ್', 'ನಿಧಿಯ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಮ'). We also reviewed 'ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ'. We also read the story about 'ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಂಗಗಳು'. In that story, kids identified 'ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ'. Coming week, they will have to tell the story in 'ಭೂತ ಕಾಲ' by transforming the verbs to past-tense. Then it was time for some quiz. I must admit the quiz was a little bit confusing but most of them got the hang of it after some time. Kids really tried hard to complete all the questions. Please review with them and answer any questions they might still have. 

For juniors, we reviewed some conversation that we had learned last week. Kids also tried to read a lesson from the Kannada text book - 'ಗಣಪನ ಪಟ'. You can find the lesson plan here. Juniors were also told the same story - 'ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಂಗಗಳು'. Looks like many of the kids knew this story already.

Thank you to all of the parents who have recorded videos about their kids saying a few sentences about a vegetable. Keep this coming! It is really nice to watch! To post a blog, you will have to accept the invitation that was sent a few days back. We posted four more videos to the blog. Thanks to Jai, Om, Megha, and Disha! We plan to watch these videos together in the next couple of weeks.

Kannada Play Day held on 02/20/2016

Well, it was another good session on a beautiful Saturday afternoon! 

There were only 4 kids at Senior session. So, we decided to play some games instead of taking a quiz! One of the games we played was to give instructions in Kannada to the other team member who is blind-folded to find a hidden fruit in the room. The team that finds the fruit in the shortest time wins. They could only use - ಬಲಗಡೆ, ಎಡಗಡೆ, ಮುಂದೆ, ಹಿಂದೆ, ತಿರುಗು, and ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ (step). 

Of course, the other one was - yes again - the numbers game. The kids have to say the number in Kannada when their turn comes. These were the rules - 

• when their turn comes, if the number happens to be divisible by 3, they have to say 'ರಾಮ'. 
• if the number is divisible by 5, they have to say 'ಕೃಷ್ಣ'. 
• if the number is divisible by both. then they have to 'ರಾಮ ಕೃಷ್ಣ'.    

They enjoyed these games. We also learnt concept of  'ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ'. We reviewed  ಷಷ್ಠೀ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ: (ಮನೆ + ಅ = ಮನೆಯ). Next week's quiz is mostly based on these concepts. We spent some time enacting how to greet a guest when he or she comes to our house. Here is the link to the presentation. 

At Junior session, we had almost a full house! Since we are following a lesson plan, you can get an idea of what we did by reading the file here . At the end, we played 'ನದಿ ದಡ'.

Kannada Play Day - 02/06/16

Just a brief summary of what we did during last session.

For seniors, we reviewed recognition of alphabets. A few kids are still struggling but it is not a big deal at this time. However, as we progress further, I do not want them to fall behind. A little more effort may be needed. Anyway, we continued learning more vocabulary as well as a little bit of grammar by reading a story (ಕೋತಿಯ ಹೃದಯ). We also did converse in Kannada making sure sure every kid spoke a few sentences.   Assignment is about ಒಗಟುಗಳು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಪದಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ ಗೊತ್ತಾದ್ರೆ ಹೋದ್ರೆ, ನೀವು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡಬಹುದು. ಉತ್ತರ ಅಲ್ಲ!

1. ಅಂಗಣ್ಣ ,ಮಂಗಣ್ಣ ,ಅಂಗಿ ಬಿಚ್ಕೊಂಡು ನುಂಗಣ್ಣ

For juniors, we followed the lesson plan which is attached below. 

For both juniors and seniors, we showed a few food items like ಅಕ್ಕಿ, ತೊಗರಿ ಬೇಳೆ, ಉ.ಬೇಳೆ, etc. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸಲ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಅವುಗಳು ಏನೆಂದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ. I am also thinking why not make a short video from each kid  with three or four sentences about a vegetable. It should take less than a minute. For example:

ಇದು ಆಲೂಗಡ್ಡೆ.

ಇದರ ಬಣ್ಣ ಕೆಂಪು ಅಥವಾ ಹಳದಿ ಇರತ್ತೆ.

ಇದರಿಂದ fries ಮಾಡ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟ!

We had created a blogspot for Kannada Play Day some time back.  May be we could use that site to upload these videos. Let us know if you guys have any other ideas. I have sent an invite to each of you to be authors of that site.
